Day One - 2861 - New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1
This is a new New Zealand Certificate that complements NCEA. The target group are students who are struggling to achieve NCEA. This group may
Have become disengaged with their learning programme, display low literacy/numeracy levels and generally under achieving.
The focus for this new certificate is to provide opportunities to develop competencies that will provide life-long learning skills and prepare young people for
the world of work, or further study.
SPEC has an NZQA approved programme for the New Zealand certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1.
The day will outline the NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1, and explore the requirements and pathways. The day will also cover the SPEC
programme, and how the components match the requirements for the new certificate. There will be a ‘hands on’ session with the SPEC resources, a
session on goal setting, planning and self reflection, and how to build up a portfolio. We will also cover the SPEC quality assurance procedures.
Level 2 unit standards can be used in the Foundation programme and used towards either or both NCEA Level 1 and Level 2.

Day Two - 2853 - New Zealand Certificate in Skills for Living, for Supported Learners, with an optional Strand for
Skills for Working.
This is a new New Zealand Certificate that has been specifically designed for students “who display learning disabilities to include those with
intellectual disabilities.” A Statement taken from the qualification.
From 2019, this will be the only New Zealand certificate for this target audience. Like 2861 above, the focus in on developing competencies, with support.
Both the new NZ certificate and the NZQA approved SPEC programme provide an exciting opportunity for personalised learning, ensure that each
individual has their learning needs met, by agreeing an individual programme. However that individual programme leads to a common overall
achievement of gaining the New Zealand Certificate in Skills for Living.
